Has anyone tried Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate to treat Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Has anyone tried Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate to treat Ankylosing Spondylitis?

  1. my rheumatologist was originally testing me for nr-axspa last year, and i was actually diagnosed with RA in december. i've been on hcq since then. however, my doctor says that the hcq is unlikely to help with the inflammatory arthritis in my spine. it's only been a couple of months; i'm still hopeful that the treatment could reduce my spinal symptoms.

    1. I have not used Hydroxychloroquine Sulfate but I know several who have for used it for RA. There have been mixed results.

      1. Did some research on pubmed. If you are looking for a double blind placebo controlled study, best wishes because most studies are funded by the pharmacy mfgs. I was able to dig this article out of the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology however. For sure, a study needs to be done. https://journals.lww.com/jclinrheum/Citation/1995/04000/A_CASE_OF_ANKYLOSING_SPONDYLITIS_TREATED_WITH.17.aspx

        1. Thank you for your response. I have seen brief comments that Hydroxychloroquine have been helpful for some to treat AS and plan to speak with my doctor about trying it myself.

        2. You are welcome. I am going to do same. However, I am ready to move on with a doctor who is open to treatments other than standard of care also.

      2. Hi Michael! Personally, I have not. I would recommend checking out this page about Hydroxychloroquine, if you haven't already: https://ankylosingspondylitis.net/q-and-a/hydroxychloroquine-sulfate/

        1. Thank You Cassia, I appreciate your response and help.
