Humira and acid reflux

Hello,
I have suffered with daily acid reflux (Gerd) for the last 3 years or so. I have just had my first Humira injection today, and it has caused my well-managed reflux to get a lot worse. Within 40 minutes of taking the Humira injection, I could feel it happening.

Are there any biologics not connected to worsening acid reflux? I can't seem to find any that aren't associated with it.

I have an extremely sensitive gut. I have to eat the same foods daily. GERD has stopped me from being able to try so many different things 😢

  1. Hello there - Sorry to hear the Humira is making your gut issues worse. It can be difficult to find just the right biological medication for your spondyloarthritis, let alone that and other comorbidities. I have had gut issues since I was very young. But, only recently have they been treated with success. The past few years I've seen a gastroenterologist who is well-informed about ankylosing spondylitis and its connection to the gut. I've found relief.

Here's a link to an article that may help understand biologicals. https://spondylitis.org/about-spondylitis/treatment-information/medications/#:~:text=TNF%20Inhibitors,-The%20tumor%20necrosis&text=These%20medications%20have%20been%20shown,axSpA)%2C%20and%20related%20diseases.

I am on a combination of medications that manage my inflammatory condition as well as gut issues. Here's another article that may have information you are looking for. https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/sites/default/files/legacy/assets/pdfs/biologic-therapy.pdf

I certainly hope others log on to help - I will return to see others' responses. Wishing you the best - Rebecca (Team member)

    1. ,
I just reached out on a previous post, however I wanted to jump in here and encourage others in the community to chime in with their personal experiences with biologics/acid reflux. I truly hope you will find some answers (and relief) soon.
