Biologics (humira) and food intolerance

I've been diagnosed with Peripheral Spondyloarthritis and was wondering if anyone who started a biologic has noticed any improvements in their gut health.

I've had severe gut problems for the last 9 years, and am hoping that the biologic I'm starting in a few weeks could potentially help. I have so many food sensitivities and have tried everything.

Not looking for gut health suggestions, just people's own experiences with a biologic ๐Ÿ˜€

Cheers!

  1. I received my first humira (40mg) injection yesterday and within 40 mins of injection my acid reflux was terrible.

It's sole destroying as I had so much hope for biologics, but after lots of research it seems that they all have the risk of causing acid reflux.

I would love to hear from someone if they too suffered from acid reflux and then changed to another biologic without any problems.

    Cheers,
    Hamish

    1. I posted on her earlier, but I thought I'd update. Cosentyx has helped my IBS, but since I have had IBS off and on for a long time it has eased some symptoms. I also added a probiotic daily. However, my daughter inherited AS from me and has had IBS problems for years. She went on Cosentyx and it made her GI tract worse. Now she's been diagnosed with Chrons and recently started Skyrizi. I hope you find some answers! Sincerely, Lisa

    2. ,
Thanks so much for the update and kind words of support.
I'm so glad to hear you are doing much better, yet I'm saddened to learn your daughter is having a difficult time.
I hope and pray the Skyrizi will make a difference for her.
I will be keeping you both in my continued thoughts,

  2. Hello - I've had gut issues since I was a young child, but only recently have we (my physicians and I) connected it to my spondyloarthritis. For many years I've suffered from symptoms of peripheral and axial spondy as well as IBD. I am currently being treated by a rheumatologist and a gastroenterologist, both of whom manage this disease. I am on a JAK inhibitor that helps with SpA symptoms, and 4 other meds to assist when I have gut attacks. I was recently reading an article that may be of interest, where a patient is in the same position as you - but treating it differently with the help of his rheumatologist. It helped me understand biologics a little better. https://www.bjchealth.com.au/connected-care/2012/12/how-is-the-choice-for-biologics-different-for-spondyloarthritis/ Sending you healing and well-being. 1. Humira hasn't helped with my AS symptoms too much but really relieved my gut issues I had had for many many years. So hears hoping it works for you as well.

      1. thank you for sharing. Sorry the arthritis pain didn't go away.

I suffered from diarrhoea for years, but I seem to have managed to get rid of that through lifestyle. However, I do suffer from GERD (chronic acid reflux). I am hoping humira might help with my acid reflux, but after researching it seems it might actually make my acid reflux worse. I suppose I won't know until I try.

My first injection is booked in for the 10th of July.

      2. I agree with you with arthritis pain can be very tricky to find way to have less pain with. Have you find anything that helps bring down your pain?

    2. ,
I do hope others will join the conversation and share their experiences. I will say each individual reacts differently to treatment.
Although this may not answer your question, it's important to note that people with axSpA/Spondyloarthritis are more likely to get inflammatory bowel disease than those without it. In addition, gut issues are fairly uncommon with biologics. ~Doreen (Team Member)
