Does anyone who doesn't have the HLA-B27 gene had any luck with the low starch diet.

I don't have the gene marker. I have read both ways that a low starch diet could help people without HLA-B27 and also that it doesn't help to eat a low starch diet. Anyone tried this? I did a keto diet and I felt better if I stayed gluten free and dairy free. I am struggling with my resolve on any diet. I get burned out from trying to not eat the stuff that I get for other people in the house. I have a house of somewhat picky eaters and I watched some of my friends have to eat strict diets when the were kids and they would just gorge the forbidden foods when they weren't with their parents.

  1. I try to eat what I want,
but gluten and dairy affect my IBS. I do exercise and do a lot of stretching.

    1. Hi ,

Many people find dietary change can be helpful with AS, and there's a big following around the low/no starch approach in the AS community. It's certainly been around for many years now (it was originally called the London AS Diet and was developed in the UK by a rheumatologist named Professor Ebringer).

I found removing starch really helpful in relieving my symptoms in the early days with AS, but over time I found it difficult to maintain. I also found gut healing protocols were helpful to me in getting on top of inflammation, and I got the best results when I worked with a qualified practitioner who helped me customise my approach. It really seems that there's more than one diet that works well for people with AS.

That's great you've figured out that gluten and dairy don't agree with you, I think listening to your body can be an excellent way to customise your diet. And as !

I wrote about my experiences with dietary change in this article, which might be of some interest to you.

  2. Don't do extreme diets without talking to your specialist. I've read on the Spanish AS site that these diets aren't approved by the societies or specialists and can lead to other health complications. You're better off with daily exercise even if it's just 10min of gentle stretching than making yourself more miserable. And no, to answer your question. I eat what I want 🤣
