How Does the Changing Weather Impact Your AS/AxSpA?

How does the changing weather impact your AS/AxSpA?

  1. A few years ago, I went to Costa Rica, stayed in a beach town on the Pacific side. When I say it was humid, I mean I felt like I was trapped in a steaming sauna. It was hard to breathe at times, and I ended up staying inside with the AC.

    1. ,
I'm saddened to hear how unbearable the weather was during your "dream vacation". Did you still enjoy yourself or did the weather impede the entire trip? ~Doreen (Team Member)

    2. I was able to get out for the first few days, went to the beach, went shopping, etc. But I was unable to go on the hikes and visit the wildlife reserves. As time went on, I couldn't tolerate being outside. My next visit will be to the mountain area, the coastline is just too hot and humid for me. Thanks for asking!

  2. Unable to cool my body down after moderate exercise, like golfing or hiking.

    1. I ended up moving away from the arid climate of the Okanagan Valley in BC. I would use an umbrella, neck cooler, and hydrate at least 3-5 L of low sugar electrolyte drinks. Taking magnesium supplements helped with leg cramps at night and ensuring I was avoiding peak times of the day for activity and seeking shade and using sunscreen. The worst was sunscreen and sweat running into your eyes…a whole different kind of sun exposure burn!

    2. Ugh, the sunscreen-in-the-eyes struggle is so real—hopefully that doesn’t happen to you too often! You've clearly put a ton of thought into managing the heat: staying hydrated, using electrolytes, timing your activities, and even using a neck cooler. You really tackled it from every angle. It definitely sounds like moving away from that arid climate was the right choice for your well-being. I hope you're settling in comfortably and already feeling the benefits of a gentler environment. 3. Thanks for sharing this - the cold weather without a doubt affects me similarly as well. What are some ways you treat your peripheral and entheseal pain throughout the seasons? Wishing you a wonderful holiday season. Rebecca (community moderator)

    1. OOPS! Pls forgive incongruent subject/predict!!

    2. - sounds like a perfect strategy to ward off the pain from enthesitis. It plagues me so much in the cold months and I'm in Arizona where "cold" is in the 50s and 60s. I find it hard to do any activity such as knitting, painting, or macrame. Thanks for the ideas that help you through. Rebecca (community moderator)

  4. All that’s ok but I’m a 69 yr old widow and I need to get things done! Everyone I know works and has families so I have to rely on myself. Me. Only me.

    1. ever so sorry to hear you have few to rely on when in need. I hope you find some encouragement and support here on our site. We are here for support and always rooting for you to have better health. With warm regards, Rebecca (community moderator)
