Living in assisted living with AS

My brother is 78 and has AS. He was diagnosed about 2 years ago. He is in assisted living due to other health issues but his AS is getting worse. He cannot walk. He does not have any pain. He wants to go home and does not understand that he cannot. I think his mental health is being affected because he does not want to be in AS. I joined this website because he does not have a way to research AS. I will be going to a Rheumotologist to see if I may have AS as well due to bi-lateral hip bursitis and sciatic nerve pain. His daughter was tested and has the AS gene. Do it appears that it is hereditary. I am 75 and have suffered with back pain since 2012. Have had numerous procedures and nothing helps except for steroid injections into the bursa every 3 months.
I guess my question is how does anyone stay in Asdisted Living with AS?

  1. ,
My heart goes out to you and your brother.
Getting the right care and treatment for AS is so important.
I thought I'd share this article on treatment options for AS: https://axialspondyloarthritis.net/treatment
In addition, you may be interested in this article on the diagnostic process: https://axialspondyloarthritis.net/diagnosis
Sending you both all my best, Doreen (Team Member)

    1. - Glad to see you here. It's heartbreaking to see a family member go through chronic issue/s especially when it results in assisted care. I do hope he is being managed quite well. Wanting to go home to a place where he has been living most of his life is natural. Being in a new place can be terribly difficult. Time in assisted living for a chronic illness such as spondyloarthritis may be what is needed for your brother, especially since he is confined to a wheelchair. There he will get the assistance and care necessary to make him comfortable. I do hope your visit to the specialist gives you answers and hope. We send love and care your way. Thoughtfully, Rebecca (team member)
