Neck pain, hard time sleeping... Advice??

Long story short... 2025 has been the worst year, I think... of my life. Never saying "This is going to be my year" again. First time ever saying that and BAM... My dog and my grandma died. I had surgery in January, February and May, for a perianal abscess. Had to heal from the inside out. So, I had an open wound for almost the entire first 6 months of this year. I've been off of my Cosentyx until recently and I'm not sure it's working anymore if I'm being honest. The effects of the medication were almost instantly felt before, but now I'm continuing to have bad neck and hip/sciatic pain. I might have a bone spur in one of my hip joints, oddly enough not the side having sciatic nerve pain. Waiting for MRI authorization. Also, my neck has had nonstop pain. I'm having an extremely hard time sleeping. I've tried a cervical pillow I got on Amazon, different pillows (feather, down, and a couple different brands) my body is just not calming down. I'm a stomach/side sleeper. I'm looking for any advice on things you've used to help you sleep. Do I need to start sleeping on my back? It feels so weird to try to sleep facing up... The Alien movies were traumatizing as a kid, so I've never been a back sleeper... LOL

  1. Turfmama, What a horrible bunch of experiences! I hope things improve rapidly from here on out!

I have found that I have to use a shredded latex pillow. It is not the original pillow I bought, either - I have had to take lots of the stuffing out so I can get it to the right firmness for my own needs, so I essentially make myself 2 pillows. Some nights I use one pillow, and another night, the second pillow depending on how badly or differently my neck feels. I think shredded foam would work similarly.

I also have to use a knee pillow or maybe even another regular pillow so that my knees and my feet are supported. It reduces torque on the back to raise the top leg.

I hope you can meet with your Rheumatologist about how Cosentyx isn't working and feel listened to.

    Best of luck!

    1. You know everyone is different when dealing with musculoskeletal pain. A lot of use have co-existing conditions, such as Fibromyalgia, which may make our pain worse. I understand that you have tried multiple pillows but I'm going to suggest a Coop pillow, try the original. Also if you can, sleeping on your back at a 30° angel may help with the neck pain. Sleeping on your side and stomach is probably going to aggravate the neck pain. Have you tried Biofreeze (professional strength) in a roller applicator. You can purchase all three of these items at Amazon, pillow, Biofreeze and applicator. What has also helped many people with stress and sleep problems are night sounds via an app. There are many like Calm and
Better Sleep. Chronic neck pain can ruin your disposition in a hurry. I hope these suggestions help you. You have definitely had a rough time of it. I have true empathy for you and hope you have some support, people wise, in your life. Good friends are wonderful for support and are really great at listening to you vent if needed.
I know everyone can't afford it but having whole genome genetic testing done may reveal other co-existing disorders or syndromes. I did a cheek swab at home, sent in the kit and it revealed so much that explained so much. I wish you nothing but the best and hope you get some relief. My thoughts are with you.

    2. I've tried Humira, Embrel and Cimzia... I was on Methotrexate, but I was losing hair. I fear I will have to add that back on my medication list to make it work again. Idk. I will check out that article, thank you!

      1. Ugh- , I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through so much this year. No wonder sleep feels impossible with all that pain and stress. No wonder sleep feels impossible with all that pain and stress. I know back sleeping can feel super weird, but some people find a wedge pillow or a body pillow helps ease into it. Gentle stretches or a warm shower before bed might help too. I hope the MRI and your Cosentyx adjustments give you some relief soon, you deserve it! -Latoya (Team Member)

        1. I know my Ankylosing Spondylitis can flare up with stress. I will definitely try a warm shower, and with the pillows, I thought maybe a weighted blanket might make sleeping on my back easier too. I'm going to try it. Thank you!
