X-ray results - could they be osteoarthritis?

I’ve had various symptoms and lower back pain for almost 6 years. I’m 44 and went to a rheumatologist today. X-ray results are back but of course I don’t understand them and don’t have an appointment to discuss results for 4 weeks !

There were some findings on the X-ray on my SI joint. Mild lower lumbar facet arthritis and moderate disc space narrowing on l5-s1.

But I’m wondering how they determine if it’s not just osteoarthritis? Is it a combination of X-ray and other things?

  1. Hi ,

Sorry to hear that you have been experiencing this pain for so long, it must be very tough.

I'm afraid I don't know a great deal about Osteoarthritis. Have you been diagnosed with this and they are checking for other potential conditions like AS?

If this is the case then AS is usually diagnosed through analysing MRI scans and some blood work - usually checking for the HLAB27 gene but this isn't always conclusive.

I hope your appointment goes well and they are able to clear these things up for you and get you the treatment that you need. Let us know how it goes!

    Wishing you all the best,
