Temporary disability in South Africa

I have been put on 6 months temp disability leave by my Rheumie and I have found my employer to be so unsupportive. I am now on my 2nd month of unpaid leave and my employer said they can only accommodate me for 3 out of the recommended 6 months my Dr recommended. I have asked if when I return I can look at half day employment as sitting for 8 hours is just too much. They have said I need this in writing from my Rheumie (which I can get), even though I know what I am physically capable of. This process has been so traumatic. Anyone else had a similar experience? I feel so alone and isolated and worried about an income and lack of support from my employer. South Africa seems so behind on this, even though my employer is an international company. Also, how do you cope knowing that you can no longer work full time....I am terrified.

  1. Hi there,

I am so sorry you are going through this. I know the employment laws/regulations differ from country to country. But it would be good to look at the employment laws and also your contract! Here in Ireland, once you have a doctors certificate and are eligible for disability then your employer has to agree and cannot fire you - It will be unpaid leave from work and then you receive disability social welfare from the state.

I was out of work for two years, on disability allowance from the state and now I am back in work, I went back part time for a year and am now back full time! It's scary, being out of work and not knowing what the future holds. I also found it scary going back after so much time! Like I said it differs from country to country but if you haven't already it would be a great idea to look at your contract, employment laws and if the state offers any social welfare.

It is a very scary/traumatic experience to go through. Know that you are not alone, I have been through this and many others! Try and get the facts and you will know more. Hopefully there is some kind of scheme that will be able to help you! I know it's easier said than done, but you do not know what the future holds. Take it day by day / week by week. Your health is what is most important here and I really hope that in time you will improve and be ready to work again! I never thought I would be able to work again!

Please keep me updated, I am here to listen and would love to know if you are able to avail of any supports.

    Thinking of you,
