Starting a biologic

Hi I am new to this forum. So I thought I would send a message to see how other people have got on using Enbrel or humira as a treatment please ? I got diagnosed with A.S 25 years ago and carry the HLA-B27 gene . usually I stay well with swimming, pilates and taking nsaid’s . I am on naproxen at the moment but sadly over the last few years I have had reoccurring flares in my knee , neck and shoulders mainly . The Rheumatologist I see has recommended enbrel or humira . I have done some research and see that they are similar but was wondering if one would work better for A.S ? Or if anyone has had any experience with taking either of them I would love to know how you got on . I am
feeling a little nervous about trying it but also feel it’s time to try something new to help ease the flares , stiffness and pain . Thank you in advance to any one that may be able to give me some advice .

  1. Great thank you for the link to some more information , that’s really helpful . Yes I hope it doesn’t take too long before I can get started on it as my knee is becoming mote painful and I am trying to stay off the prednisone .
    Thanks again .

    1. I too try to stay away from prednisone! I hope you start your biologic soon and it's the one for you!

  2. Hi

Before I started biologics (which enbrel and humira are) I was so nervous! But it has helped me so much, it gave me my life back. I found with these drugs there is a lot of trial and error. I started with Cimzia, it didn't work for me. I'm now on Cosentyx over a year and it has been amazing! I hope it all goes well for you. Sending love, Ali (Community Member)

    1. Thank you for your message . I am really happy to hear that they have helped you and you have found one that works well for you .
I had one consultant say they have found Enbrel to work better for A.S patients and the other consultant as my last one has left said they prefer humira . But like you say maybe it’s trail and what ever works for the individual . I think I will start with Enbrel and see how I get on . I am having all my blood tests and X-rays done first before I can begin the treatment . So in the meantime I will keep reading up and try to find out so more info . Blessings to you 😀

    2. I really hope Enbrel is the one for you! Yes, do keep researching. You might find this link helpful https://ankylosingspondylitis.net/treatment/enbrel
