Walking advice for AS

Hi everyone
I did mention I had started doing some walking a month ago to try an help things, I live in the uk and in September our weather was ok even though it’s nearly autumn,
I think I was pushing myself but wasn’t sure and I did 45 minutes to an hour most days, a lady on here said be careful not to push yourself too much but because I loved doing the walk and less pain I thought carry on,and tried to do a little work in the garden but only took a few weeds out, fast forward to two weeks ago and my flare started, did have one in May/ July but not as bad as this I am still in a flare I haven’t been able to go for a walk since and just moving around the house, the pain as you know is bad, because I have high cholesterol and in my sixties I need to to exercise but since the flare and it’s impact I am struggling what to do, the weather has changed it’s cold and rainy and heading to winter so will only get worse, cold weather effects me bad.
What advice do you think I can try?
No support groups round here either
Thank you.

  1. Good evening Kathy
Yes it’s very difficult especially now with the winter coming, cold and damp makes the pain worse.
I am still trying yoga it’s made for AS the one I have joined it’s online, the people who run it have AS as well.
Seating exercises I can do a little but every thing else is painful when I try.
Walking poles sounds not easy I have seen people with them but I am small in height not sure I would find them comfortable, I do listen to music when I walk, what I have started to do is walk in our house, it’s only a small house but i can do some walking there.
I found hydro therapy really useful but only able to have six sessions on the NHS.
I am looking at trying Acupuncture,do you know if it could help.
    Thank you

    1. Walking is always highly recommended, but its a fair-weather exercise and the cold and damp of the winter months makes it nearly impossible. One of our patient leaders wrote this article about various exercise regimes and suggested yoga? Have you tried that? When the weather does cooperate, another of our patient leaders suggested walking poles, and his favorite playlist. Maybe these suggestions will give you some ideas. Warmly, Kathy (Team member)
